We're looking for a seasoned Solution Architect with HCL Commerce expertise to drive the design and evolution of a multi-tier B2B commerce platform, steering architecture decisions across legacy Commerce systems, Spring Boot services, and modern Next.js storefronts.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain target and transitional architecture for a multi-tier B2B commerce environment, spanning the WCS store, business logic, Commerce tools, Spring Boot APIs, and Next.js / React storefront
  • Direct the design of dual-run / strangler patterns, deciding which journeys stay on WCS versus move to Next.js and services, while safeguarding routing, session, catalog, cart, and order consistency, and setting cut-over and rollback procedures
  • Produce and review solution designs, sequence/integration diagrams, and interface contracts (REST/SOAP), catching reusability, performance, security, and operability concerns prior to build
  • Work closely with product, delivery leads, QA, DevOps, and enterprise/integration teams on requirements gathering, data conversion, integration testing, and cut-over execution
  • Define coding and design standards across Commerce customization, Spring Boot services, and the Next.js storefront so squads stay consistent
  • Steer integration with back-end systems (ERP, payments, search, CMS, punchout / customer purchasing systems), preserving a clear boundary between Preview (authoring) and Runtime (customer-facing) Commerce environments
  • Evaluate designs and pull requests spanning Commerce, services, and storefront layers, and trace complex cross-layer defects back to their root cause
  • Offer guidance on capacity planning, caching strategies, search, and failure handling for a high-traffic B2B storefront
  • Mentor senior engineers and leads, capturing architecture decisions along with their context, options considered, and consequences to maintain continuity
  • Pinpoint major obstacles and use structured problem-solving techniques to tackle complex, multi-system issues
Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Between 12 and 20 years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 5 years serving as an architect or in an equivalent principal/staff design capacity on large-scale commerce or comparably complex multi-tier systems
  • At least 8 years of hands-on expertise with HCL Commerce and/or IBM WebSphere Commerce (WCS) 8.x, including store customization, commands/tasks, tools, catalog/order/user/organization workflows, and back-end integration
  • At least 8 years of expertise in Java / J2EE and object-oriented design for large IT systems, with a strong preference for WebSphere Application Server experience
  • At least 5 years working with Spring / Spring MVC, with practical Spring Boot architecture experience covering service boundaries, APIs, resilience, and authentication
  • At least 5 years of experience building web services (REST and SOAP), including the ability to define contracts that other teams can implement against
  • Hands-on production architecture experience with Next.js and React, covering routing, data fetching, BFF/API integration, and storefront performance optimization; TypeScript experience is preferred
  • At least 5 years using source control systems, with Git experience required
  • Preferred background in designing B2B commerce architecture, including punchout functionality, organization/user models, and complex contract/pricing logic
  • Experience delivering work through Agile methods using Atlassian tooling (Jira, Bitbucket/Git, Confluence)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for engaging both technical and non-technical audiences
Nice to have
  • Familiarity with headless/composable commerce concepts (API-first storefronts, BFF, packaged capabilities) and iPaaS platforms such as MuleSoft
  • Exposure to search technologies (Solr or similar), caching systems (Redis or similar), and CMS-powered storefronts (Optimizely or similar) working alongside a commerce engine
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (GKE/Kubernetes or similar) supporting storefront and Spring Boot deployments, plus WAS/IHS for Commerce
  • Solid grasp of security practices, PCI-adjacent payment flows, and session/identity management spanning legacy and modern storefronts
  • Prior involvement in dual-run initiatives or large-scale commerce migration efforts
