We are looking for an experienced SAS Mainframe Developer with strong expertise in batch processing and large-scale data handling on mainframe systems. The role involves working on legacy SAS applications, supporting reporting and data processing workflows, and contributing to strategic migration initiatives from SAS to modern technologies.
Responsibilities
- Development and maintenance of SAS programs in a mainframe batch environment executed via JCL
- Data extraction, transformation and analysis from mainframe data sources such as DB2, VSAM and flat files
- Handle and process mainframe-specific data formats such as packed decimal and EBCDIC
- Design and generation of high-volume reports and summary datasets for business and regulatory needs
- Optimization of SAS jobs for high throughput and performance on large datasets
- Collaboration with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions
- Ensure data accuracy, integrity and consistency across processes
- Provide support for production issues, job failures and performance bottlenecks
- Documentation of existing SAS workflows and contribution to knowledge transition efforts
- Support of Phase 1 migration through conversion of SAS-based logic to mainframe technologies such as COBOL, DB2 and JCL
- Analysis of existing SAS programs and assistance in reverse engineering business logic
- Identify opportunities for optimization and simplification during migration
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in Base SAS programming in a mainframe environment
- Proficiency in JCL and batch job processing
- Understanding of mainframe systems and data structures
- Experience working with DB2, VSAM and sequential datasets
- Knowledge of mainframe data formats such as packed decimal and zoned decimal
- Expertise in data processing, reporting and summarization
- Understanding of code performance tuning and large data handling
- Basic exposure to COBOL
Nice to have
- Experience in SAS to COBOL migration projects
- Familiarity with legacy modernization and cloud migration initiatives
- Exposure to Azure data platforms
- Knowledge of Unix/Linux environments
