We are seeking a contract Senior Automation Tester in Java to join the sprint team as an embedded member, responsible for reviewing completed work before promotion to Staging, managing the staging release process, and maintaining the health of automated test suites. This role provides an independent quality review and applies the team's established testing and release standards, while participating in standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives with shared accountability for sprint commitments.
Responsibilities
- Verify completed work against acceptance criteria, design intent, and expected product behavior
- Test changes in the development environment, including adjacent functionality at risk of regression
- Document defects in Linear with reproduction steps, expected and actual behavior, environment, and severity
- Provide Product stakeholders with a concise summary of each release candidate for approval
- Own the staging release process and determine which completed items are ready for promotion
- Execute releases using the team's automation and promote work that passes quality review
- Return failed items to the owning engineer with clear reproduction details
- Run and maintain Playwright, unit, and integration test suites
- Triage failures and distinguish product defects from flaky tests
- Diagnose and repair flaky or outdated tests
- Identify duplicate tests, dead tests, coverage gaps, and inaccurate test-plan status
- Extend or repair test specifications when it is the most efficient path to restoring coverage
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in QA or test automation roles with strong product judgment and the ability to identify gaps between a technically passing implementation and the intended outcome
- Experience with risk-based test prioritization
- Proficiency in AI-assisted QA or development tools such as Claude, Claude Code, or equivalent
- Expertise in Playwright, including running, interpreting, debugging, and repairing end-to-end tests and diagnosing flaky behavior
- Working knowledge of Next.js, React, and TypeScript
- Familiarity with browser developer tools and application logs
- Clear written communication for defect reports and release summaries
- Ability to work independently within defined goals and processes
Nice to have
- Experience owning a release or staging-promotion process
- Knowledge of CI/CD, particularly with GitHub Actions
- Experience debugging Firefox and WebKit issues
- Experience testing mapping, geospatial, data-visualization, or scientific-modeling products
- Familiarity with analytics tools such as PostHog
