We are seeking an experienced AS/400 Application Specialist to guide the AI Tools team in building and maturing EPAM's in-house solution for IBM iSeries (AS/400) application reverse engineering, analysis, and modernization.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate deep expertise in IBM iSeries (AS/400) applications, architecture, data organization, coding patterns, development practices, tools, and infrastructure, including RPG III, RPG IV, RPGLE, free-format RPG, CL/CLLE, COBOL, DDS, DSPFs, SQL, Db2 for i, libraries, objects, service programs, display files, printer files, physical and logical files, commitment control, and journaling
- Apply strong knowledge of Db2 for i and SQL-based application analysis, including database relationships, physical and logical files, views, indexes, constraints, triggers, stored procedures, journaling, data quality, and performance considerations
- Conduct application portfolio analysis and evaluate RPG, CL, COBOL, DDS, SQL, and Db2 for i coding patterns; identify redundant, unreachable, duplicated, obsolete, tightly coupled, and highly complex code
- Assess application quality, maintainability, performance, technical debt, modernization readiness, and potential risks
- Analyze legacy IBM AS/400 applications, identifying dependencies and business rules, tracing data flows, documenting application behavior, and assessing undocumented or complex codebases
- Drive modernization initiatives including RPG refactoring, fixed-format-to-free-format conversion, DDS-to-DDL conversion, Db2 modernization, API and web-service enablement, UI modernization, application decomposition, cloud integration, re-platforming, and application retirement
- Collaborate with the AI Tools team to define requirements, validate analysis logic, improve prompts and rules, and enhance the accuracy of AI-generated application documentation and code insights
- Guide the development of AI capabilities for program understanding, dependency discovery, business-rule extraction, data-flow analysis, impact analysis, code summarization, test-case generation, and modernization recommendations
- Contribute to technical assessments, proofs of concept, solution demonstrations, effort estimation, project planning, risk identification, progress reporting, and executive-level presentations
- Partner with customer IBM i SMEs, application owners, business analysts, modernization specialists, AI Tools team members, testing teams, cloud architects, and Technical Leadership across the client and EPAM organizations
- Ensure that the reverse-engineering and modernization solution complies with enterprise architecture standards, customer security policies, source-code handling requirements, data-protection controls, audit requirements, and applicable regulatory obligations
Requirements
- 9+ years of experience in enterprise midrange (iSeries or AS/400) technologies, with 5+ years focused on application analysis, reverse engineering, and modernization solutions
- Expertise in RPG III, RPG IV, and RPGLE
- Proficiency in free-format RPG, CL/CLLE, and COBOL
- Competency in DDS, DSPFs, and SQL
- Background in Db2 for i, including database design, performance tuning, and SQL-based application analysis
- Understanding of IBM iSeries (AS/400) architecture, libraries, objects, service programs, and file structures (physical, logical, display, printer)
- Skills in reverse engineering legacy AS/400 applications, tracing dependencies, business rules, and data flows
- Knowledge of modernization approaches including RPG refactoring, fixed-format-to-free-format conversion, and DDS-to-DDL conversion
- Familiarity with API and web-service enablement, UI modernization, and cloud integration or re-platforming strategies
- Capability to collaborate with cross-functional and AI-focused teams to enhance tooling accuracy and delivery outcomes
- Proficiency in English at an Upper-Intermediate level (B2) or higher
